Rail lines helped establish towns, concentrate industry, create commuter corridors, and connect the metropolitan region to wider national networks. Even where highways later became more visually dominant, the geography established by rail often remains embedded in downtowns, industrial districts, property lines, and municipal identity.

Its alignment implies destinations, freight movement, passenger demand, junctions, yards, industries, stations, and communities that either benefited from access or developed differently because they were bypassed.

The railroad system includes several overlapping forms of movement. Freight railroads connect industries, yards, terminals, and the wider national network. Commuter services tie suburban communities to Chicago. Intercity passenger routes connect the region beyond the metropolitan area, while local and regional transit systems fill in the spaces between major rail corridors.
These systems use many of the same geographic corridors while serving different purposes.
That overlap is part of the region's character. A single rail corridor can simultaneously be an industrial spine, a commuter route, a municipal boundary, and a historical reason for the towns located along it.
Rail infrastructure also creates places of its own.
Stations can become civic centers. Yards generate working landscapes and employment. Junctions can give small municipalities regional importance far beyond their population. Shops, terminals, industrial spurs, and intermodal facilities create distinct landscapes where transportation becomes one of the dominant local land uses.
Understanding the rail network is therefore one of the clearest ways to understand how TIP grew.
